When Repeated Repairs Deserve a Bigger Conversation

A repair can address one failed section of pipe. When problems keep appearing elsewhere, it is worth looking at the supply system as a whole.

  • Gray Plastic Supply Pipe

Gray plastic pipe is visible beneath a sink or near the water heater.

  • Rust-Colored Tap Water

Water runs brown or orange when a tap first opens after sitting.

  • Weak Flow at the Tap

Flow drops noticeably as soon as a second fixture turns on.

  • Repairs Keep Adding Up

Another section needs repair after earlier patches elsewhere.

What a Whole-House Repipe Involves

The Supply Pipe We Replace

Polybutylene is our most common repipe material. It is commonly gray, but color alone does not identify it, so we check markings, fittings, and connections. Galvanized steel can corrode from within, restricting flow and discoloring water. Copper can develop pinholes or corrosion. We weigh material, condition, and repair history before recommending which pipes to replace.

Choosing PEX or Copper

PEX is flexible tubing that handles longer runs and some turns without extra fittings, and it does not rust like steel. Copper provides rigid runs where the layout and water conditions suit it. Sizing, support, and routing matter either way. We explain how each would work in your home and choose with you during the estimate. Pipe and fittings carry the manufacturer's coverage.

Whole House or Selected Sections

A whole-house repipe makes sense when aging material remains throughout the home or repairs keep spreading; some homes need only one section replaced. Your estimate lists which pipes are replaced, which remain, and the material. Drains and fixtures are outside a supply repipe, and the line outside the home is water line repair.

What Happens When You Call

You do not need to identify every pipe first. Tell us about past repairs, or what an inspection report found about polybutylene or galvanized steel.

What Affects the Cost of Repiping a House?

Every repipe starts with a free on-site estimate, and financing is available through Wisetack.

  • Bathrooms and Fixtures. The number and location of connections determine how much piping is needed.
  • Replacement Material. Choosing PEX or copper affects the materials and installation work.
  • Project Scope. Replacing a few runs involves less work than replacing supply pipes throughout the house.

Repiping Older Treasure Valley Homes

In Boise, Meridian, and Nampa, an older home may have original supply piping alongside sections replaced during past repairs or remodels, so it needs a closer look than its age alone. Polybutylene is the material we replace most often, and remaining galvanized and worn copper also warrant assessment. We are a small local crew, and the plumber who quotes your repipe runs the work.

Whole-House Repipe Questions

How Much Does It Cost to Repipe a House?

Repiping cost depends on the bathrooms and fixtures served, the replacement material, and how much of the supply system is included. A partial replacement and a whole-house project involve different scopes. The price factors above explain what shapes the work. We provide a free on-site estimate after inspecting the piping and discussing the recommended replacement.

How Long Does It Take to Repipe a House?

The schedule depends on the size of the home, the number of fixtures, the selected material, and the extent of the replacement. We assess those conditions before discussing timing. During the on-site estimate, we explain the proposed scope and schedule so you can plan around the work. We do not assign the same duration to every house.

How Do I Know If I Have Polybutylene Pipe?

Polybutylene supply pipe is often gray and may carry a “PB2110” marking, but color alone is not enough to identify it. Visible sections may be near the water heater or beneath a sink. Look at accessible piping without disturbing the connections. We inspect the markings and fittings during the visit and explain what material is present.

Is PEX or Copper Better for a Repipe?

PEX and copper can both be suitable for a repipe; the better choice depends on the house, water conditions, and planned installation. PEX is flexible, while copper provides rigid runs and uses a different connection approach. We discuss those practical differences during the estimate. The recommendation should explain why the selected material fits your project rather than present one as universally better.

Do You Replace Galvanized Pipe?

Yes, Howe Plumbing replaces galvanized supply piping and assesses whether selected sections or the whole system should be replaced. We look at the piping that remains, its condition, flow concerns, and previous repairs. Replacing one section may be appropriate in some homes. Where deterioration extends through the system, we explain why a broader repipe may make more sense.
